Hair of the Dog

The cornus, or dogwood is a winter necessity in a garden devoid of colour. The bright red or orange stems of this very useful shrub look fabulous near water or against a back drop of dark green evergreens. The best display I’ve ever seen is at Anglesey Abbey, near Cambridge, which has an outstanding winter garden. There are masses of Cornus species, some are trees, but the shrubs with coloured stems are Cornus alba, C. sericea and C. sanguinea. My all time favourite is the nearly neon Cornus sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’, with its orange stems and bright red tips like a flame.

Here in Battersea Park, even the foliage is making quite a statement before the leaves drop. These area by the lake, surrounding a Barbara Hepworth sculpture, and the glowing pink looks magnificent and uplifting on a grey day.
